(นี้เป็นครั้งแรกที่ผมได้ไปสัมภาษณ์ชาวต่างชาติต้องขออภัยด้วยสำหรับภาษาอังกฤษที่ไม่ค่อยแข็งแรง) ในงาน BarCamp Bangkok 2 คุณเก็น คานาอิ (Gen Kanai) ได้มานำเสนอเกี่ยวกับ Firefox 3.1, TraceMonkey, Fennec และโครงการใน Mozilla Labs หลังจากที่คุณเก็นได้นำเสนอเสร็จแล้ว ผมก็ได้มีโอกาสเข้าไปสัมภาษณ์ ถ้าท่านผู้อ่านมีข้อสงสัยหรือจะเสนอความคิดเห็นสามารถเสนอได้ในช่องความคิดเห็นด้านล่างครับ

กรุณาแนะนำตัวเองและงานที่คุณทำใน Mozilla

ผมมี 2 ตำแหน่งงานใน Mozilla ผมเป็นผู้บริหารแผนพัฒนาธุรกิจของเอเชียสำหรับ Mozilla Corporation และผมก็ทำหน้าที่เดียวกันนี้ใน Mozilla Japan งานที่ผมทำจึงไม่ใช่งานที่เกี่ยวกับโปรแกรมมิ่งอาทิเช่น การตลาด พัฒนาธุรกิจ สื่อสารกับสื่อมวลชน และติดต่อกับชุมชน สัปดาห์ที่แล้วผมได้ไปบรรยายในงาน COSCUP 2008 ที่ไต้หวัน

• Firebug คือส่วนขยายที่สำคัญมากสำหรับเว็บเบราว์เซอร์ เป็นสิ่งที่สำคัญมากๆ สำหรับนักพัฒนาจาวาสคริปต์ และมันยังสามารถพัฒนาออกไปได้อีกด้วยการใช้ปลั๊กอินของ Firebug เช่น YSlow หรือ Jiffy
• GreaseMonkey เป็นอะไรที่ค่อนข้างเจ๋งมาก เพราะคุณสามารปรับแต่งหน้าเว็บในรูปแบบของคุณ เพื่อสร้างอินเทอร์เน็ตสำหรับตัวคุณเอง

การเปลี่ยนแปลงที่เห็นได้ชัดใน Firefox 3.0

ผมคิดว่าส่วนที่สำคัญในการเปลี่ยนแปลงของเวอร์ชั่นนี้คือ การจัดการหน่วยความจำ ความเร็ว และระบบความปลอดภัย เราใช้เวลาค่อนข้างมากในการทำให้ Gecko 1.9 นั้นเร็วขึ้น ใช้หน่วยความจำน้อยลง และเพิ่มความคุณสมบัติด้านความปลอดภัย ซึ่งคุณสมบัติด้านความปลอดภัยที่สำคัญในเวอร์ชั่นนี้ได้แก่ การตรวจสอบมัลแวร์ และอีกคุณสมบัติคือ Extended Vlidation SSL

ผมคิดว่าพวกเรากำลังวางแผนกันอยู่แต่ผมยังไม่ได้ทราบรายละเอียดมากนัก แต่ผมก็ค่อนข้างแน่ใจว่าพวกเรามีแคมเปญสำหรับ Firefox 3.1 แน่นอน

Mozilla เน้นที่ผู้ใช้งานหรือเน้นที่องค์กรเป็นหลัก? แล้วทำไมถึงเป็นเช่นนั้น

นี้คือประวัติของ Mozilla นะครับ Mozilla มาจาก Netscape และ Netscape นั้นเน้นทั้งผู้ใช้งานและองค์กรธุรกิจ อย่างไรก็ตามหลังจากที่สร้าง Mozilla ขึ้นมา เป้าหมายหลักของ Mozilla และการวางแผนจนกระทั่งทุกวันนี้คือการให้ซอฟต์แวร์ฟรีที่ดีที่สุดแก่ผู้ใช้งาน ตอนนี้มีหลายองค์กรที่ใช้ Firefox แต่การนำไปใช้ในองค์กรนัั้นไม่ใช่เป้าหมายหลักของเรา

เราหวังที่จะได้ข้อเสนอแนะ ใน Firefox 3.0.2 ภาษาไทยจะเป็นเบต้า ผมคิดว่าน่าจะมี 9 ภาษาใหม่ที่จะเป็นเบต้า ดังนั้น Firefox 3.0.2 และ 3.0.3 เราจึงมองหาการตอบรับจากผู้ใช้จากผู้ใช้ชาวไทย เพื่อที่จะทำให้ภาษาไทยจากเบต้าไปเป็นเวอร์ชั่นที่เป็นทางการ และเราต้องการที่จะแก้บั๊กที่มีในการแปลภาษา

Android มี Webkit อยู่แล้ว ดังนั้นเราจึงมุ่งการพัฒนาไปที่ Windows Mobile, Linux และ Symbian

เป็นไปได้ไหมที่ Mozilla จะนำ Fennec ใส่ลงไปใน iPhone

เราได้ทำหลายๆ โปรโมชั่น เป็นพันธมิตรกับเว็บใหญ่ๆ สร้าง Foxkeh เป็นโฮสต์ใน Mozilla 24 และการประกวดต่างๆ เราได้ลองหลากวิธีที่จะทำให้ผู้ใช้รู้จักกับ Firefox

ส่วนแบ่งทางการตลาดของ Firefox ในญี่ปุ่น

เราเชื่อว่าน่าจะอยู่ที่ประมาณ 14-15% แต่มันก็ยากที่จะรู้ตัวเลขที่แน่นอน

เป็นไปได้ไหมที่ Mozilla จะนำตุ๊กตา Foxkeh ไปไว้ใน Mozilla Store

ตามปกติ Mozilla Store ก็มีตุ๊กตา Fox อยู่แล้วแต่ไม่ใช่ตุ๊กตา Foxkeh มันจะเป็นไปได้ถ้าเราได้คุยกันและถ้าคุณคิดว่าเราควรทำ กรุณาบอกผมด้วย

เป็นไปได้ไหมที่จะมี Mozilla Store ในเอเชีย

ผมก็ต้องการ Mozilla Store ในเอเชีย เพราะการซื้อจากยุโรปเป็นอะไรที่แพงมาก Mozilla Store ในยุโรปมีสกุลเงินเดียวกันคือ ยูโร แต่ในเอเชียนั้นไม่มี มันจึงเป็นการยากที่มี Mozilla Store ในเอเชีย ซึ่งเป้าหมายของเรานั้นไม่ได้อยู่ที่การเปิด store แต่อยู่ที่การพัฒนาตัวซอฟต์แวร์

คุณมีอะไรที่จะบอกกับผู้ใช้ชาวไทยไหม?

เรามีความสุขมากที่สามารถทำ Firefox ในภาษาไทยได้ เรากำลังมองหาความช่วยเหลือจากผู้ใช้ชาวไทยอยู่ เรามีกิจกรรมที่ผู้ใช้ชาวไทยสามารถช่วยเราได้เช่น โปรแกรมมิ่งหรือด้านเอกสาร และเรายังมีหลายกิจกรรมที่ต้องทำสำหรับผู้ใช้ชาวไทย ดังนั้นเราจึงหวังว่าพวกเขาจะมาเข้าร่วมกับ Mozilla และช่วยเผยแพร่ Firefox กับเรา

(This is my first time to interview with foreigner, apologize for my poor English) At BarCamp Bangkok 2 (August 30-31 2008), Gen Kanai came to presentation about Firefox 3.1, TraceMonkey, Fennec, and other Mozilla Labs projects. Please introduce yourself and what do you do in Mozilla

I have two jobs. I am director of business development in Asia for Mozilla Corporation and I also do the same job for Mozilla Japan. So it's a non-programming job everything to do is not programming such as marketing, business development, communication with press and communication with community. I am speaking in conferences. Last week I was in Taiwan speaking at COSCUP 2008

Give 3 Extension that you really like

• Firebug is most important extension for web browser. It's very important for JavaScript programmers and also it extensible so you can have plug-ins like YSlow or Jiffy for firebug.
• GreaseMonkey is amazing because you can customize any page in your own way so you can make your own internet
• Control-Tab

What are the large changes in Firefox 3?

I think the most important are memory management, speed and security. We spend a lot of time to make Gecko 1.9 much faster, to use less memory, and we added many more security features. Important security features are malware detection feature and the next one is Extended Vlidation SSL.

Some users don't like awesome bar because they have some secret website or history that they don't want another people know. How Mozilla do for
this problem in the next version of Firefox?

We are reconsidering a privacy mode for the future version but I don't know it will arrive in Firefox 3.1 but many people are considering it. Of course Safari has it now, IE 8 they have announced a similar feature.

Many people know Firefox 3 via Firefox 3 world record campaign. Does the Mozilla planing some campaign for Firefox 3.1?

I think they planning some campaign but I don't know the details. I am sure they have some campaign.

Does the Mozilla focus on end user or organization. Why?

This is the history of Mozilla. Mozilla came from Netscape and Netscape had both the consumer and business focus. However when Mozilla was created, the goal of Mozilla was and all planing even today is to provide the best free software for the end-user. We have many businesses using Firefox today but enterprise adoption is not our goal.

Thai Firefox will release in early September after that what is the Mozilla do for Thai users?

We are hoping to get feedback. Firefox 3.0.2, Thai language would be beta. I think 9 new languages would arrive in beta. So Firefox 3.0.2 and 3.0.3, we are looking feedback from Thai users to make the Thai version from beta to official. So, we want to fix any bug in the localization.

Opera browser has great features such as low memory usage, download file via bittorent or mouse gestures but why Firefox catch high market share than Opera?

I think Opera browser is very good browser but features are not the only important thing. You can have many many features like some office software but most users they only use limited features. For Firefox, we are try to provide the simple browser with customize ability so any body can add mouse gesture, bittorent or whatever they want. I think important of Firefox is ease of use for beginner and customize ability for expert users is why Firefox is popular.

2-3 days ago, Microsoft released IE8 beta 2 that has similar features in Firefox 3 such as smart address bar and search suggestion. Is it a good or bad news for Mozilla and what do you thing about it?

It is very good news for all internet users. We are happy to see Microsoft doing more innovation for web browsers and supporting more web standard. It's good thing for all web user and also for web developer and I think IE8 is very important.

Can Mozilla put Fennec in Android?

Android already have Webkit. So our focus will be Windows Mobile and Linux and also Symbian.

Can Mozilla put Fennec in iPhone?

No because Apple iPhone terms and conditions does not allow Firefox or Java. So we can't provide it.

What does the Mozilla Japan do for Japanese users?

We have done many different promotions, partnership with big consumer websites, created Foxkeh mascot, Mozilla 24 and contest. We try many different ways to get people know about Firefox.

Market share in Japan

Market share in Japan, we believe in now something about 14-15%. It's hard to know exactly.

Can Mozilla put the Foxkeh doll in Mozilla Store?

In the Mozilla Store today there is a Fox doll but not Foxkeh doll. It's possible if we have been discuss thing and if you think we should. Please let's me know.

How about Mozilla Store in Asia

I also want Mozilla Store in Asia because buying from Europe is very expensive. Mozilla Store in Europe also has same currency (Euro) but in Asia we doesn't have so it can be difficult. I also want too but our focus had been more on software development than open the store.

Do you have anything to tell Thai Firefox user?

We are very happy to be able to provide Firefox in Thai language. We are looking for help form Thai users. We have many activities that Thai users can help us with. It's can be programing or documentation. We have many many activities that we must do for Thai users so we hope they will join Mozilla and help us to spread Firefox.
