ร่วมกันช่วยตรวจสอบปัญหาการแปลของ Firefox 3 ภาษาไทยโดยการดาวน์โหลด Firefox 3 ของแต่ละระบบปฏิบัติการ (ลินุกซ์, Mac OS X, วินโดวส์) และแจ้งปัญหาเข้าไปที่ BugZilla หรือ Google Code (แนะนำให้ใช้ BugZilla ก่อน Google Code)

This is a chart which is reflected the web browsers usage trend in Thailand. It’s obvious that the-never-dies-legendary-web-browser, a.k.a IE6, is still in use at 50%+ of total market share and IE7 is obviously climbing to catch its older-brother’s success.

Where is our friendly neighborhood, Firefox? Regarding to the last usage statistic from Truehits, Firefox has 7.1% of total market share in Thailand. It’s quite low? Yes, it is. Its growth rate is a it slow, too.

In Thailand internet-sphere, Firefox is popular, most of, techies. Lacks of Thai-specific features can prevent end-users are very high boundary for them e.g. Thai word/line break, Understandable user interface, Firefox Thai web interface, the understading of Pros and Cons of IE and Firefox etc, moreover, the end-users never know about differentiates between the dark side and the Jedi.

Firefox Thai team members are putting our effort to make Firefox more usable for Thais. Firefox’s user interface and web part are the highest priority of the team. Let see the market share after the Official Firefox thai is released.

That’s one small step for Thai team, one giant leap for Thai users. The official translation test and verification will be annouced soon.

สืบเนื่องมาจากทางทีมแปลภาษาไทยของ Firefox กำลังเร่งจัดการแปลทั้งตัวโปรแกรมและหน้าเว็บของ Firefox ให้เป็นภาษาไทยรวมถึงพวกการตั้งค่าต่าง ๆ ซึ่งก่อนหน้านี้ทาง mk ได้มาทำการขอความเห็น เรื่องการตั้งค่าของตัวโปรแกรม Firefox ไปแล้ว ผมซึ่งตอนนี้กำลังจัดการแปลหน้าเว็บทั้งหมดของ Mozilla อยู่จึงมีคำถามมาถามเช่นกัน เพื่อจะได้ไม่เกิดปัญหาว่าเป็นการตัดสินจากทีมภาษาไทยโดยลำพังครับ บั๊กที่เกี่ยวข้อง : 447701

ในหน้าเริ่มต้นของ Firefox สำหรับผู้ใช้ใหม่ของภาษาอังกฤษในปัจจุบันนี้ (หน้าเว็บ) จะมีการแนะนำเว็บใน 4 หมวดคือ Work, Learn, Play, Connect โดยจะเป็นการแนะนำบริการ พร้อมทั้งคำโปรยย่อ ๆ ของบริการนั้น ๆ โดยมีรายละเอียดคือ

ในกรณีของหน้าเริ่มต้นของภาษาไทย มีคำถามขึ้นสองคำถามคือ

• เว็บที่จะอยู่ในหน้าเริ่มต้นควรจะเป็นเว็บใดบ้าง?
• ในกรณีหาเว็บไซต์ของไทยใด ๆ ไปไว้ที่หน้าเว็บไม่ได้ เราจะยังต้องการที tab ทั้ง 4 อันนั้นอยู่หรือไม่?

ความเห็นของผมคือ เว็บไซต์ของไทยที่จะเอาขึ้นหน้าเริ่มต้นของ Firefox จะต้องเป็นเว็บไซต์ที่ไม่แสดงหาผลกำไร อย่าง MCOT? และไม่จำเป็นต้องเป็น tab เพราะนึกไม่ออกว่าจะหารายการเว็บไซต์ที่ไม่แสวงหาผลกำไรในเมืองไทยไปหยอดลงตามแต่ละหมวดหมู่จากที่ไหน

Thai specific problem is default font face for Thai language is unacceptably ugly, espectially for Microsoft Windows, this is an annoying bug because every new user have to change font settings manually in Preferences (Sorry it’s on Mac), and, you may know, making users think is a bad usability. According to bug #284265 and BugAThon Bangkok the follow settings have proposed:-

Windows:
serif: Tahoma
sans-serif: Tahoma
monospace: Tahoma

Linux:
serif: serif
sans-serif: sans-serif
monospace: monospace

Mac OS X:
serif: Thonburi
sans-serif: Thonburi
monospace: Ayuthaya

and the fond size for each type is:-

Windows:
font.size.variable.th = 16
font.size.fixed.th = 13
font.minimum-size.th = 10

Linux: font.size.variable.th = 16
font.size.fixed.th = 13
font.minimum-size.th = 13

Mac OS X: font.size.variable.th = 16
font.size.fixed.th = 13
font.minimum-size.th = 10

By those given settings, a patched build will have nice font settings for Thai out-of-the-box. Therefore, I would like to ask you, all readers, to give a try on the Firefox 3 patched build and give me a feedback. Once all OS is confirmed, the bug can be closed and it might be incorporated to Firefox 3.0.1 or 3.0.2.
